St. Vincent New Beginnings is a non-profit in Delaware County made up of many kind-hearted volunteers motivated by the care and concern for the well-being of those men incarcerated and those soon-to-be-released who will be transitioning back into society. Our passion is to make a difference by assisting in their move toward self-sufficiency.

In our work in the Delaware County Jail, we witness an increasing anxiety among the men anticipating their release dates. Simply, when released, they have no place to go. Statistically, most men lack any stable housing in which to return. And, although some men couch surf and sleep in cars when they are released, many shelter in garages, behind sheds, or among the bushes. Living on the street is frightening and that possibility causes anxiety. And more tragically, this homelessness makes it practically impossible for a man to secure a job, save money, find a permanent residence and stay out of jail. Today’s recidivism (return to jail) rates are an unbelievable 55%.

According to a recent study by Jacobs and Gottlieb, men with stable housing at the time of release are 40% more likely to remain on the path to restored citizenship and positive contribution to the community. Assistance like job services and training, counseling, health care support, transportation opportunities, etc., are all important and play a big part, but are mostly ineffective without the missing piece of stable housing. Providing the safety and security of transitional housing is our primary goal. And to this point, we have worked especially hard and are now realizing the opening of just such a shelter.

We are so grateful to our present and past donors, those of you who have joined us in our efforts to serve this population and reach this milestone! We extend to you our heartfelt thanks. Your generosity has been inspirational.

And as we move forward, knowing that this men’s transitional housing is the final piece necessary to round out our promising reentry program, we are again appealing to you, and the entire community, for the kindness needed to jump these final hurdles. We can’t open without both the furniture and the supplies necessary. The sooner we furnish the house, the sooner we can open. With your help we intend to launch as soon as March, 2026.

Any contribution will go a long way in helping. Just a $20 donation can provide for a bedroom table lamp; or $30 can provide for a bedside table; and a $100 donation will help buy a small bedroom dresser. And for those willing, a $500 donation can provide for an entire bed, including frame, mattress, pillows, bedding, blankets and pillowcases.

With your help, we can offer the necessary safe housing and plant the seeds for a new beginning. Their hope and desire for a fresh start are in our hands. Together, we can save lives!
